13th Confucius Institute Conference Concludes in Chengdu

On December 5th, the 13th Confucius Institute Conference concluded in Chengdu, Sichuan Province. Themed on ¡°Facilitating the New Development Through Reform and Innovation, Forging a Brighter Future with Concerted Efforts¡±, the two-day conference held 2 special forums, 8 presidents¡¯ forums and 20 workshops. More than 1,500 Chinese and foreign representatives from over 150 countries and regions came together and spoke freely to jointly make suggestions for the development and reform of the Confucius Institute, fully demonstrating the ¡°inclusive, innovative and colorful¡± characteristics of the Confucius Institute.

Tian Xuejun, Vice Minister of Education, attended the closing ceremony and delivered a speech. He awarded 30 outstanding Confucius Institutes (Classrooms), 41 outstanding individuals and 10 outstanding Chinese cooperative institutions. At the closing ceremony, over 20 well-known Chinese enterprises jointly launched ¡°Confucius Institute Partnership Project¡± to support the development of the Confucius Institute.

Tian Xuejun pointed out in his speech that the Confucius Institute emerges out of Chinese education¡¯s reform, opening up, and going global. It also stands as a successful example of China¡¯s educational exchanges and cooperation with other countries around the world. We hope that both China and other countries could continue to join hands and devote wisdom and energy to build a wider path for people-to-people and cultural exchanges, the building of a community with a shared future for mankind and a beautiful future for human society.

C¨¦line Davesne, Vice President of NEOMA Business School, France, Jim McDonald, Principal of the University of Strathclyde, UK, Jiang Feng, Chair of the University Council of Shanghai International Studies University, China, Michael Novak, Executive Director of the Confucius Institute at Middle Tennessee State University, US, and Li Kaiming, Director of the Confucius Institute at the University of Zimbabwe, addressed the closing ceremony on behalf of presidents and directors participating in the forums and workshops.

The conference set up 2 special forums, namely, ¡°Improving Academic Level of Confucius Institute¡± and ¡°Confucius Institute and Vocational Skill Training¡±, and 8 presidents¡¯ forums, namely, ¡°Innovation in the Schooling Pattern and Management Mechanism of Confucius Institute¡±, ¡°Professionalism of Backbone Teachers¡±, ¡°¡®Chinese Plus¡¯ and Specialized Development of Confucius Institute¡±, ¡°Digitalization of Confucius Institute¡±, ¡°The Building of Evaluation Mechanism and Exit Mechanism of Confucius Institute¡±, ¡°Cultivating Plural Partnership System for Confucius Institutes¡±, ¡°Building Two-Way and Plural Platforms for Communication in Confucius Institute¡± and ¡°Shaping and Showcasing the Public Image of Confucius Institute¡±. Set up for the first time in the Confucius Institute Conference, the workshops invited domestic and foreign presidents, directors and experts and scholars to discuss face to face on 20 issues related to the development of the Confucius Institute. At the forums and workshops, more than 220 attendees delivered keynotes and over 460 attendees were engaged in major discussions, fully exchanging ideas and thoughts.

Signing ceremonies of new Confucius Institutes and Confucius Institute Partnership Project were held on the sidelines of the conference.

Up to now, there have been a total of 548 Confucius Institutes, 1,193 primary and secondary Confucius Classrooms, and 5,665 Chinese teaching spots in 154 countries and regions around the world. 46,000 full-time and part-time teachers from both China and other countries have taught more than 11 million students face to face to date. Confucius Institutes have held various cultural activities drawing hundreds of millions participants across the world and built the most diversified network of international language education.
