On September 1st, President Xi Jinping held talks with President Azali Assoumani of Comoros, who came to China for 2018 Beijing Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation in the Great Hall of the People.

After the meeting, witnessed by the two heads of state, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi and Foreign Minister Souef Mohamed El Amine of Comoros jointly signed the Agreement on Joint Establishment of the Confucius Institute at the University of Comoros.

Located in the southeast Indian Ocean, the Union of the Comoros is an African island country covering an area of 2,336 square kilometers. Its capital is Moroni and Comoros has a population of about 800,000. The official languages are French, Arabic and Comorian.

As the only comprehensive university in Comoros, the University of the Comoros consists of a liberal arts college, a law school, a medical school, a normal college, an engineering college, a school of nursing, and a vocational-technical school, with 220 staff and 13,000 students now.

The Confucius Institute at the University of Comoros is the first Confucius Institute in the country. In collaboration with Dalian University, its predecessor, the Confucius Classroom at the University of Comoros was unveiled on July 1st, 2014.

Since its establishment, the Confucius Classroom has offered Chinese language, Chinese acupuncture and massage courses, held a variety of cultural activities, and launched the Shaolin Kungfu brand, receiving welcome from students and local people. The Classroom has made great contributions to promoting cultural exchanges between the two countries and the friendship between the two peoples.
