Confucius Institute at De Montfort University Celebrates 5th Anniversary

On March 19th, local time, the Confucius Institute at De Montfort University (CIDMU) celebrated its 5th anniversary at Vajey Patel Building. Present at the event were Andy Collop, Deputy Vice-Chancellor of De Montfort University (DMU), Wang Yongli, Minister Counselor for Education of the Chinese Embassy in the UK, Quan Liangzhu, Vice President of the University of Science and Technology Beijing (USTB). Over a hundred people from all walks of life attended the celebration, including British and Chinese directors of a dozen of Confucius Institutes in the UK, and journalists from various media. Ma Jianfei, Deputy Chief Executive of the Confucius Institute Headquarters sent a letter of congratulation to this event.

In his speech, Andy Collop spoke highly of the CIDMU for its achievements in the last five years since its establishment in Chinese language teaching, cultural activities, integration into primary and secondary schools, universities and communities, and academic exchanges between the two schools. He said that DMU would continue to support the building and development of the Confucius Institute, and it has included the Chinese Spring Festival and the Mid-Autumn Festival as holidays into the school calendar. He firmly believed that the Confucius Institute would be better and better.

Quan Liangzhu said that the Confucius Institute, as a bridge between USTB and DMU for exchanges and communication, has played an irreplaceable role in the cooperation between the two universities. He hoped that the two universities would further cooperate with each other in various fields in the future.

In his speech, Wang Yongli expressed his appreciation for the support of the two universities for the work of the Confucius Institute and affirmed the positive contributions made by the Confucius Institute in promoting Chinese language teaching, Chinese culture, and China-UK friendship. He hoped that the Confucius Institute would make further achievements for the UK-China ¡°Golden Era¡± and contribute to building a community of shared future for mankind.

Yang Yingjun, Chinese Director of the CIDMU, read Ma Jianfei¡¯s congratulatory letter and delivered a closing speech. He extended his appreciation to people from all walks of life for their support for the Confucius Institute. He said that the Confucius Institute would adhere to its mission as always, endeavor to meet the needs of all kinds of Chinese learners, and make greater contributions to promoting the development of diverse cultures and building a harmonious world.

At the ceremony, teachers from the Confucius Institute performed a folk dance ¡°Nation of Rituals and Ceremonies¡±, Taichi Fan, an ensemble of erhu and pipa ¡°Beautiful Myth¡± and other activities, showing the charm of Chinese culture and wining the applause from the audience. In the end, guests cut the birthday cake which bore the logo of the Confucius Institute. The celebration rounded off in applause.
